We have some incredible breaking news coming out of the Estadio Municipal Francisco Bonet this afternoon.
Almuñécar City's application to enter an U23 development side into the 3a Andaluza Granada (Senior) has been approved meaning that Almuñécar City will have two sides competing in the local senior leagues next season - and, of course, the U23 side will be looking to win the title won by the first team in 2017/18.
Head Coach George Jermy had this to say:
"With just 24 hours to go before preseason gets underway it's a pleasure to announce the huge news of our new U23 team who will compete in last season's Tercera regional division!
In football you very rarely get the chance to defend a title but that's exactly what we will be going into the season to do!
After lots of work behind the scenes with the Federation and the town hall we have launched CDAC Atlético to ensure we have the correct development pathway for our young squad and further progressions from the FC Malaga City Academy into competitive senior football.
With 80% of the CDAC squad being sub 23 this allows them to play for both squads at any point during the season without limitations. With a strong 25 man squad this season it's essential we keep every player sharp and ready for action as it's going to take a push from every single member of the squad and academy to achieve our goals of a 2nd promotion and 1st for CDAC Atlético.
As a club we are really excited and humbled by our progress and in less than 12 months it's simply mind blowing - to think the infrastructure we now have with senior team - u23 - u19 affiliate in Almuñécar 77. It's an incredible pathway for our academy players and local alike.
The preseason will be full throttle and plenty of mouth watering encounters, we look forward to welcoming everyone back and hope the town can really get behind the club and everything that is going on!"
CD Almuñécar City Atlético will be joint-managed by first-team captain/coach Sean Morris, an ex-MLS player and the club's General Manager, Chris Darwen.
There is a full preseason fixture schedule for Atlético which will be announced tomorrow afternoon.
