Tobias Karlsen and Luismi were both on target in the second-half as CD Almuñécar City started the new season with a hard-fought 2-2 draw away at Cúllar Vega CF.
The hosts took the lead early in the game, but after CDAC levelled through Karlsen’s penalty, another stunning strike restored Cúllar Vega’s lead.
Both sides had a man sent off inside the final 15 minutes of the game and the visitors earned a point on the road when Luismi converted the second penalty of the afternoon.
After the disappointment of losing in the Play-Off final last season, CDAC were looking to make amends and start the new season on the front foot.
It didn’t take the visitors long to settle into the game as Juan Carlos Añón’s team went close to taking the lead with just three minutes on the clock.
Bradley Booysen’s free-kick made its way into the box and the unmarked Taylor James guided his headed back across goal, but the goalkeeper to make an excellent save to tip the effort behind for a corner.
With their first opportunity of the game, the home side took the lead through a moment of individual brilliance. A stray pass was intercepted by …, who fired his shot into the top corner - leaving Gabriel Mendoza helpless in the CDAC goal.
Almuñécar continued to get the ball down and play and looked threatening going forward. Luismi latched onto Kundai Mukweva’s clipped pass over the top, drove into the box and was denied by the ‘keeper.
Tobias Karlsen went close shortly after before the visitors had a great opportunity to level, with Booysen brought down on the edge of the area. Luismi curled delightfully over the wall, only to be denied by a one-handed save from the goalkeeper.
Cúllar Vega had the momentum closing out the first-half, with the No.7 striking a free-kick narrowly wide of the post before the wide man then fired against the crossbar on 43 minutes.
Juan Carlos got the reaction he was hoping for going into the second-half as the visitors were awarded a penalty just a minute after the restart when Booysen was pulled back in the penalty area.
After a lengthy delay, Karlsen fired into the bottom corner to draw CDAC level. Just two minutes later, Emmanuel Ogunnubi saw his shot saved from point-blank range.
The hosts restored their lead through a spectacular strike, but the away team continued to dig in and the game sprung back into life in the final 15 minutes of the game.
Booysen received a straight red card for challenge in front of the dugouts, but despite having a man disadvantage, it was CDAC that were on top and applying pressure to find an equaliser.
The game entered the 84th-minute. Luismi broke down the left and his cross rattled the crossbar. Lee picked up the rebound on the right and worked the ball to the edge of the box.
Substitute Erick Mulu struck first time and the Cúllar Vega defender blocked the effort with his arm and a penalty was given. Three minutes passed before Luismi was able to take the spot-kick, but he fired under the arm of the diving goalkeeper to equalise.
The home side had the ball in the back of the net in injury time, but it was ruled out for offside and the points were shared on the opening matchday.
CDAC have their first home game of the season next weekend when they take on local rivals CD Juventud Sexitana.
